AATBS Introduces New Products for Californians Preparing to Become Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors

Ventura, CA (PRWEB) May 31, 2012

The Association for Advanced Training in the Behavioral Sciences (AATBS) has developed two new products to prepare California Social Workers (LCSW) and Marriage and Family Therapists (MFT) to become Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors.

California licensed Social Workers and Marriage and Family Therapists who applied for “grandparenting” to be a California Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor by December 31, 2011 are required to pass a GAP Exam to earn a “grandarented” LPCC license. The exam, administered by the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS), is designed to cover the differences between the practice of clinical counseling with the practices of marriage and family therapy and clinical social work.

AATBS has developed an online mock exam program (TestMASTER) and an online webinar to prepare candidates to pass the GAP exam. The two-hour webinar addresses both the specific content of the GAP Exam and the process/pragmatics of taking a multiple-choice exam on a computer. Many LMFTs and LCSWs need more information about topics presented in the candidates’ handbook, such as computer based information systems, career counseling inventories, the ethics of conducting counseling research or new laws about conducting distance counseling. Additionally, those who were licensed some time ago may be uncertain about what to expect at the test site, how to manage time, and what strategies are generally useful with multiple-choice items presented on a computer.

Part I of the webinar is a quick overview of content. Participants will learn facts and concepts likely to be addressed on the exam. Part II is about process. The instructor will take participants through 10 new sample questions, with plenty of opportunity to ask questions and discuss rationale.

The webinar is led by Kathy Wexler, longtime Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and newly-“grandparented” Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor. Kathy is an exam expert and has been preparing California MFTs for licensure for over 30 years, and is well known for her clear and focused teaching style. Kathy is the MFT Program Director at AATBS. She is also Department Chair and Core Faculty at Phillips Graduate Institute in Chatsworth, and has a small private practice with individuals, couples and families.
