Launch of Private Couples Retreat Puts Executive Marriage Stress in the Cross-Hairs

On October 1, 2011, Inner Sync Systems Inc. launched the “Between Men and Women” private couples’ relationship retreat for executives whose marriages may be stressed by their hectic lifestyle as well as by ongoing uncertainty in the broader economic and business environment.
“Making a marriage work today is as difficult as it has ever been,” said Jason Krausert, CEO of ISSI, citing a 43.1% divorce rate in Canada.
“Executives and other high-performing individuals, however, have a unique lifestyle that places unique pressures on them and the people closest to them, especially their spouse,” Krausert added.
Corporate executives and senior managers have a wider range of day-to-day responsibilities than the population in general. They travel more frequently, they generally work longer hours, and they are always on call. As with most people today, “down time” with the family is at a premium. All of this limits the time they can spend with their partner and increases the strain on that key relationship.
In addition to these lifestyle issues, crushing recessionary pressures of recent years have forced executives to manage their businesses in a stress-elevated environment characterized by intense competition, downsizing and slashed operating budgets.
“The executive lifestyle is stressful. Broader economic conditions today make it even more so. Workplace stress affects overall well-being and gets in the way of a couple’s ability to maintain the connection they once had. And of course, it’s a two-way street. Once problems start at home, studies show that personal health, as well as workplace productivity, engagement and effectiveness start to deteriorate too,” Krausert said.
He added that while the divorce rate amongst executives is still below that of the general population, these combined pressures threaten that trend.
“Couples need new tools to ensure their home life remains a healthy oasis in the midst of a seemingly endless stream of business, financial and other challenges.”

“Seven out of 10 people that need the services of an employee assistance program, including marriage counseling, do not get help because of the stigma associated with it,” Krausert said.
“For executives this service ‘gap’ is likely wider because of concerns over maintaining anonymity and the feeling of social isolation many have. When you’re at the top who do you talk to about personal problems?” Krausert added.
The “Between Men and Women” retreat fills that gap. It is based on evidence that many of the problems people experience in relationship result from misunderstandings they have about who their partner is as a man or a woman.
“Because of these misunderstandings about who men and women are, we place unrealistic expectations on our partners. When they don’t meet those expectations disappointment and frustration sets in and the deterioration starts. The Between Men and Women Method is a natural system for preventing or reversing that process,” Krausert explained.
